why is it good to have auto insurance and what are the repercussions for not having any?

i have to do a persuasive paper for school and this is basically my topic. i cant change it. ): i'm only 18, i live with my parents, and they pay for the insurance. i have no knowledge of it what so ever! are there any basic points you guys can give that i can use/research for my presentation? thank you!
