If I do not renew my auto insurance policy, am I technically cancelling it?

I'm switching auto insurance companies next month, and rather than cancelling my current policy, I would just like to not automatically renew it. Is this the same as a cancellation? I would be using the entire term of my current insurance policy, and the new policy would kick in seamlessly. If it helps, I live in NJ. Thanks for the quick responses. To be more clear, I do not plan on lapsing on my insurance at all, and will definitely have proof that I was and am covered. I just need to know that I have a leg to stand on if they try hitting me with a cancellation fee.
