Do you have to have auto insurance if your car is undriveable and parked until fixed?

My car is not driveable, and I am saving money until I can make it so. It's going to be a while until I fix it. Can I leave the car parked in my parking area and not drive it, and cancel my insurance until I get it fixed without legal consequences? Is there law code that specifies required insurance in this case, and if so, how would I find such law code? I have had others tell me both that it is not required and is required, and I do not know who to believe.
