How do auto insurance companies know if you have had car accidents/tickets in the past?

I was in a fender bender, but there was never a police report filed. However, I did file a claim on my insurance company. If I was to switch insurance policies, would the new insurance company be able to know about the accident? OR since there was no police report is it not on record?
